The occult sciences and esotericism were embraced by a massive enthusiasm at the end of the nineteenth century in Petersburg. Olivia Reed, a British medium, is on tour in Russia’s capital and draws large crowds to her public spiritualistic sessions. During this time, the city is witnessing a series of mysterious ritual murders. Girls are kidnapped on the streets, and their mutilated bodies have been discovered throughout the city. Rostov, a young police officer, and his assistant Ganin are conducting the investigation. Things become more complicated with each new victim. Suspicion leads Rostov to Olivia, and he decides to turn to her in the hope that her genuine or fictitious ability to summon the spirits of the dead will help him track down the murderer.
